Demystifying Acupuncture Points for Better Health
Have you ever wondered how tiny points on your body can have a significant impact on your overall health and well-being?
Read articleAcupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that has been practiced for over 2000 years. It involves the insertion of thin needles at specific points on the body. This practice operates on the principle that energy (Qi) flows through meridian pathways in the body, and by stimulating specific points, we can restore balance and promote healing.

Knowing what to expect makes the first visit easier. Here is how a first acupuncture appointment runs at our Bella Vista clinic.
Your first appointment begins with a detailed conversation about your main concern, medical history, current medications, sleep, digestion, energy and stress levels. This usually takes 15–20 minutes and shapes everything that follows.
Joy uses tongue and pulse diagnosis alongside your history to identify the underlying pattern behind your symptoms. This is what distinguishes TCM from symptom-led care — two people with the same complaint often receive quite different treatment.
Single-use, sterile needles roughly the width of a human hair are inserted at selected points. Most people feel a brief dull ache or tingling, then nothing. You rest with the needles in place for 20–25 minutes, and many patients fall asleep.
Before you leave, you will have a clear plan: how many sessions are likely, how frequently, what improvement to look for, and by when. If Traditional Chinese Medicine is not the right fit for your concern, Joy will tell you and suggest where to go instead.
How long it takes. Initial appointment 60–75 minutes; follow-up sessions 45–60 minutes.
Acute problems such as a recent strain or a tension headache often respond within three to four sessions. Long-standing conditions are usually treated weekly for four to six weeks, then reviewed and spaced out as symptoms settle. Joy will reassess at every visit rather than booking a fixed block up front.
Acupuncture has the strongest research base of any TCM modality, with the most consistent findings in chronic pain, tension-type headache and migraine prevention, and chemotherapy-induced nausea. Evidence is weaker or mixed for many other indications, and results vary between individuals.
Joyful TCM Clinic is registered with the major Australian health funds, so if your extras cover includes acupuncture you can claim on the spot via HICAPS and pay only the gap. Rebate amounts and annual limits vary considerably by fund and level of cover — check your policy before your first visit, or call the clinic and we will help you work out what you are entitled to. 0477 021 713
