Women's Health

Chinese medicine is an ancient system of healing that is based on the theory that the body has natural energy pathways, called meridians. We integrate Eastern and Western approaches for the best results, providing holistic care and personalised wellness solutions tailored to individual women's health needs.

What happens at your first women's health appointment

Knowing what to expect makes the first visit easier. Here is how a first women's health appointment runs at our Bella Vista clinic.

  1. Health history and consultation

Your first appointment begins with a detailed conversation about your main concern, medical history, current medications, sleep, digestion, energy and stress levels. This usually takes 15–20 minutes and shapes everything that follows.

  2. Cycle and hormonal history

Joy will ask in detail about your cycle length, flow, pain, PMS, and any investigations or diagnoses you already have. Bringing recent blood results, ultrasound reports or a cycle-tracking app export makes the first visit considerably more useful.

  3. Traditional Chinese Medicine assessment

Joy uses tongue and pulse diagnosis alongside your history to identify the underlying pattern behind your symptoms. This is what distinguishes TCM from symptom-led care — two people with the same complaint often receive quite different treatment.

  4. Treatment plan and expectations

Before you leave, you will have a clear plan: how many sessions are likely, how frequently, what improvement to look for, and by when. If Traditional Chinese Medicine is not the right fit for your concern, Joy will tell you and suggest where to go instead.

How long it takes. Initial appointment 60–75 minutes; follow-up sessions 45–60 minutes.

How many sessions you will need

Menstrual and hormonal work is measured in cycles rather than weeks. Joy generally asks for three full cycles before judging whether treatment is working, with sessions timed to particular phases of your cycle. Menopausal support often starts weekly and moves to fortnightly as symptoms ease.

Before and after your session

  • Track your cycle, symptoms and basal temperature between visits — this is the data treatment decisions are based on.
  • Bring any new pathology or imaging results to your next appointment.
  • Keep your GP or specialist in the loop; TCM here works alongside medical care, not instead of it.

What the evidence says about women's health

The most studied applications are period pain, cycle irregularity and menopausal hot flushes, where acupuncture and herbal formulas have shown benefit in a number of trials. Conditions such as endometriosis and PCOS require medical diagnosis and management — TCM is used here as supportive care.

Health fund rebates

Joyful TCM Clinic is registered with the major Australian health funds, so if your extras cover includes acupuncture you can claim on the spot via HICAPS and pay only the gap. Rebate amounts and annual limits vary considerably by fund and level of cover — check your policy before your first visit, or call the clinic and we will help you work out what you are entitled to. 0477 021 713
