Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine is a form of traditional medicine that uses plants to heal. It has been used for centuries to treat various ailments, such as infections, digestive issues, and skin problems. Our herbalists prescribe medicinal plants and recommend dietary and lifestyle modifications for holistic wellness.

What happens at your first herbal medicine appointment

Knowing what to expect makes the first visit easier. Here is how a first herbal medicine appointment runs at our Bella Vista clinic.

  1. Health history and consultation

Your first appointment begins with a detailed conversation about your main concern, medical history, current medications, sleep, digestion, energy and stress levels. This usually takes 15–20 minutes and shapes everything that follows.

  2. Traditional Chinese Medicine assessment

Joy uses tongue and pulse diagnosis alongside your history to identify the underlying pattern behind your symptoms. This is what distinguishes TCM from symptom-led care — two people with the same complaint often receive quite different treatment.

  3. Formula prescription

Joy composes a formula for your specific pattern rather than dispensing an off-the-shelf product. She will check it against any prescription medicines you take and explain what each part of the formula is doing.

  4. Treatment plan and expectations

Before you leave, you will have a clear plan: how many sessions are likely, how frequently, what improvement to look for, and by when. If Traditional Chinese Medicine is not the right fit for your concern, Joy will tell you and suggest where to go instead.

How long it takes. Initial consultation 60 minutes; herbal reviews 20–30 minutes.

How many sessions you will need

Formulas are typically prescribed for two to four weeks at a time and then adjusted as your presentation changes — a formula that is right in week one is often not the right formula in week five. Acute complaints may need only one or two prescriptions; constitutional work usually runs over two to three months.

Before and after your session

  • Take your formula as directed, usually in warm water between meals.
  • Tell Joy about every prescription medicine, supplement and over-the-counter product you take.
  • Stop and contact the clinic if you notice digestive upset, rash or anything unexpected.
  • Do not share a formula with anyone else — it is composed for your pattern, not your symptom.

What the evidence says about herbal medicine

Chinese herbal medicine is used for a wide range of conditions, with the better-quality research concentrated in digestive complaints, menstrual disorders and some skin conditions. Herbs are pharmacologically active and can interact with prescription medicines, which is why the full medication review at the first visit is not optional.
